2018 Wolfenden seminar and lecture, Thursday 24 May
Wednesday, 23 May 2018
On Thursday 24 May, please join us for a special guest seminar and lecture on the controversial enactment of Section 28 in English, Welsh and Scottish law.
The amendment of the Act stated that a local authority “shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality” or “promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.”
These special events are being held on the 30th anniversary of the enactment as part of our new Wolfenden seminar and lecture series (see below). All staff and students are welcome to attend.
Wolfenden Seminar: “Section 28: Context, Impact, and Resistance”
A discussion panel featuring Rosemary Auchmuty, Eve Featherstone, Deb Heighes, and Booan Temple, reflecting on the political and social contexts in which the legislation was proposed and passed, its impact on individuals, families and organisations, and the strategies developed for protest and resistance.
The seminar takes place at 4.00pm-5.30pm, G15, Henley Business School. To book your place, please visit the Employee Self Service or our Public Events Page.
Wolfenden Lecture: “Section 28: A Poisonous Law and Legacy"
Internationally renowned LGBT+ and human rights activist Peter Tatchell will present a special public lecture exploring the historical effects and legacy of the controversial enactment of Section 28.
Please join us at 7.00pm in G11, Henley Business School. Admission is free, but places are limited – to book your place, please visit our event listing page.
About the Wolfenden series
The Wolfenden lecture series is named in memory of Lord Wolfenden, who was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading from 1950–64. Lord Wolfenden chaired a committee that wrote the 1957 ‘Wolfenden Report’, a key milestone in LGBT+ history in the UK.
