The University of Reading is ranked 46th in the Guardian University Guide 2019, published this week, a fall of 17 places on the previous year’s ranking.
The guide ranked 121 universities on a set of criteria including their students’ satisfaction with course, teaching and feedback; entry tariff; degree outcomes; and their employment status six months after graduation.
An initial analysis of the data suggests that the University outcomes in National Student Survey (NSS) – which accounts for 25% of the ranking – is one of the major factors for the drop. Some measures where the University has scored well in recent years, for example, the Spend-per-Student measure, have had their weighting reduced.
Among the changes introduced this year is a new ‘Continuation’ measure, which looks at the continuation rate from first year to second year. The University’s reported continuation rate of 94.4% is ahead of both the average for the top 50 and the full sector. The methodology then adjusts the score to take into account the respective entry tariff of the students.
