One million paid to student workers through Campus jobs
Thursday, 31 May 2018
Since its official launch in September 2017, Campus Jobs has paid in excess of £1 million to student workers.
Following the aphorism ‘if a student can do it, they should do it’, Campus Jobs has facilitated the recruitment, worker experience and payment to students in over 3,300 roles so far.
The service operates through an online portal, which enables students to search for part-time work opportunities on campus in one convenient location.
To date, student employment opportunities have included giving campus tours, mentoring, marking, roleplay acting for examinations, event photography, help on the IT service desk and assisting with research – to name only a few!
With so many varied locations on offer – bars and cafés, classrooms, laboratories, offices, studios and even excavation sites, Campus Jobs enables students to harness the essential skills needed to build their employability.
The service centralises and streamlines several aspects of recruitment, including payment and right to work checks. Previously, right to work checks would be carried out locally per role, but through Campus Jobs, students only need to complete one check and sign one contract for multiple roles. As a result, the system makes it easier for the University to monitor compliant working hours, including those associated with Tier 4 Visas.
Equally, before Campus Jobs, the process for paying student workers was paper-based, which could lead to considerable delays due to volume and processing times. Now, workers can complete online timesheets that are sent automatically to the relevant manager to approve – completely removing the risk of paperwork being misplaced. Payroll have seen a significant reduction in workload each month, and with the new timesheet deadlines, workers are paid sooner than the previous system.
Meanwhile, managers are seeing the advantages of being able to recruit fairly from the huge range of keen workers available through Campus Jobs:
Dan Fernbank, Energy Manager in our Sustainability Services team, said:
“Campus Jobs is really a win-win. We are able to offer new, flexible positions in support of our sustainability goals, while providing valuable work experience to interested students. Our expectations have often been exceeded and we look forward to continuing to employ students in this way.”
Jacqui Fletcher, Programme Area Manager for Undergraduate Programmes, said:
“I have been recruiting ambassadors for years and employing them regularly throughout the year for various activities. Campus Jobs has been brilliant for me, they deal with all the paperwork and ensure the students get their money on time. I have also found the team members to be extremely helpful when I have questions or want to do something slightly different. Keep up the good work everyone.”
The team behind Campus Jobs would like to thank colleagues for their patience and feedback following the launch – without it, the service could not have reached this exciting milestone. Your continued support and feedback is greatly appreciated.
