VC's report to Senate - June 2018

Brexit, the Office for Students' guidance on access and participation and developments in the higher education sector were among the topics covered in the Vice-Chancellor's report to the University Senate meeting on 28 June 2018.

He said, “Since my last report, there have been other important Brexit-related developments which are worth noting. First, the government has confirmed it is proposing that EU migrants who come to Britain during the Brexit implementation phase will have the right to gain settled status and settle permanently in the UK.

“Second, the government published its view of how Horizon Europe (the successor to Horizon 2020) could best build on the achievements of earlier programmes in strengthening Europe’s science base.

“Third, the Erasmus+ exchange programme is likely to be open to any country in the world, which would then provide a way for UK universities and students to take part post-Brexit.”

He said these were all welcome developments and the government is soon expected to publish a lengthy white paper on matters relating to Brexit

Senate is the University’s main academic administrative body. Reporting to the Council and meeting at least four times a year, the Senate advises on areas such as student entry, assessment and awards.

With around 100 members, the Senate comprises Deans, Heads and elected representatives of Schools, as well as professional staff and students. University Boards responsible for developments and innovation in research, teaching and learning report to the Senate.
