Modern Languages and European Studies move to the Miller Building

The refurbishment of Miller and the move follow other recent modernisations on Whiteknights campus and form part of the University’s ambitious 2026: TRANSFORM capital investment programme, which focuses on improving campus facilities and supporting the student experience.

Catherine Léglu (Head of Department) and Enza Siciliano Verruccio (Department Director of Teaching and Learning) reflect on the move of Modern Languages and European Studies (MLES) to the Miller Building:

In August, the Department of Modern Languages moved from their historic location in Edith Morley into the Miller Building. The move was accompanied by a significant refurbishment, which has added a big, bright Student Study Space to the university. This space contains a resources area with books covering all four languages (French, German, Italian and Spanish) taught in MLES, a quiet study area and a PhD study room. Students preparing their year abroad will have access to the Department’s Year Abroad coordinator in an office that sits right at the heart of the Student Study Space. The ground floor now also houses the Department’s East German Archive. The Department plans to host temporary exhibitions as well as open days in their new space.

 The Department of MLES is proud to inhabit “a modern and bright space for all to gather in a spirit of collegiality”. Colleagues are delighted with the new offices on the first floor, which are quiet, close to nature and cosy. Located just on the side of busy hubs, staff and students have all the important facilities at hand such as the library. A covered bicycle parking area has been provided, and the staff kitchen is a great addition to workplace happiness.

There is still some work to do, and future visitors should look out for photos and possibly a big map of the world on which we will mark where our students are studying and working on their year abroad...
